016: Qing or lightness by Ma Yueliang

“Qing” or lightness in Taijiquan cannot be explained as ‘not using force’ by our simple logic. Qing is something that relates to heaviness. Qing means not using “Bao Fa Li” (Explosive Power), and also avert from “Double weighted.” Qing is also not sluggish. Sluggish and Bao Fa Li are Taijiquan’s major forbidden. Qing is having power but not using it. This is the reason why Taiji Jin be explained as “It seems Song but not Song, be extend but not extend.” Taijiquan’s movements, hands, eyes, body methods, stepping methods, etc., are all in between having force and having no force. During the state of being extend but not extend, your emptiness and fullness must be distinguished clearly. Therefore you can form Taiji Jin.
